Vital Statistics - Digital Trends
Digital Trends — Flashback Edition
Oh how the web we know does grow and grow! As we work towards migrating and merging all the heritage content across to our swanky new 11ty site I couldn't help but get distracted by this old post.
Ever the admirer of a good statistic, I thought it would be nice to revisit this one. Let's see what the ebb and flow of time has done to a few key areas of the digi-sphere.
Vital Statistics Revisited: May 2024
177 Million
Viewers flocked to BBC iPlayer during the Christmas week (25–31 Dec 2023) setting a new all-time iPlayer record for a week. The last week of 2023 saw programmes streamed a record-breaking 177m times, up +7% on the same time the year before – and beating the previous record (2–8 Jan 2023) when 173m streams of programmes in a week.
652 Million

The first full week of that month (4–10 January) was the biggest week ever, with 163 million streams. 10 January 2021 is iPlayer's best single day with programmes streamed 26 million times – driven partly by four very popular third round FA Cup matches including Marine v Tottenham Hotspur.

Vital Statistics Flashback: May 2010
These original stats were published in 2010.
Streaming
120 Million
Programme requests per month handled by the BBC iPlayer. The figures for January show a six percent increase on December – which was 14 percent up on November.
Socials
According to a 2010 study from Pingdom, the 35–44 age group dominated the social media sphere, accounting for 25% of users across 19 sites. Making them the most active demographic. This is a significant finding, with older age groups like 45–54 also highly active. This challenged perception with the data showing that social media activity was not exclusive to younger generations, older age groups also showing strong and sustained participation in the online social space. Not at all lagging behind in technology adoption.
37
The average age of social network users, according to analysis by Pingdom. As you might expect, that differs by network: Bebo's average is 28, MySpace 31, Facebook 38, Twitter 39 and LinkedIn 44.

- Bebo appeals to a much younger audience than the other sites with 44% of its users being aged 17 or less. For MySpace, this number is also large; 33%.
- Classmates.com has the largest share of users being aged 65 or more, 8%, and 78% are 35 or older.
- 64% of Twitter's users are aged 35 or older.
- 61% of Facebook's users are aged 35 or older.
Mobile
$12.7 Billion
Estimated value of the mobile location-based services market by 2014, according to Juniper Research. Although usage will be the highest in the Far East, the majority of revenues will come from Western Europe.
