Primitive Me

Beginnings - Little Fledgling

Way back when…

Once upon a time there was a small and curious fledgeling.

An unusual youngster, born into a throughly more unusual world.

A mere product of farmers and publicans, sired and raised in a small village adjacent to the archaic Viking capital of England, Jórvík.

Our fledgeling, was no ordinary child. Little did he know but he was destined to become one of The Curious.

A child of the 80s, a time of change and cultural flamboyance. A time of technological advancement and social revolution. A time of great music and even greater hair.

He went about life experiencing all that was new with hungry eyes, wide with excitement and sparkling like morning dew mimicking Newton’s prism.

His days were filled with wonder, imagination and play.

Taking context from culture of our era to create modern archetypes, if this we’re Friends, he’d be The Monica. The builder of dens, the host with the most and the master of games.

He was a child of the village, a child of the fields and the forests. A child of the rivers and the streams. A child of the earth and the sky.

Our protagonist would spend hours in self-constricted imaginary and fantastical worlds, creating cryptic games or sagas for him and his friends to play.

If reminiscence were edible, reflections of village life in Yorkshire would be most delicious. A world before screens and smart phones. A world of touch and physical interaction. Mud, bruising, falling off bikes. An un-filtered world where it was OK for mothers to say ‘go play on a motorway’, as long as you were home before it was dark.

With days of endless summers spent cloudbusting, adventuring and exploring. As night set in friends would climb wendy houses or lay in fields gazing at the starlit sky, spotting constellations and asking WTF is that a bear, it looks nothing like a bear?!

Of course, it’s never all fun and games forever. Any owner of an ecstatic and excitable mind will know, or will come to know, that as you grow so does the thirst for knowledge.

Curiosity, the notorious cat-killer, would take hold. Disillusionment would inevitably set in and discontent with the familiar. He couldn’t be confined to a life of mundane routine and imposed irregularities like I before E, except after C.

The spirit became restless. He yearned to explore the world beyond the village, to experience the wonders of the great cities and the untamed wilderness. With a heart full of hope and a mind brimming with dreams he would inevitably set out on a perilous journey, into the great yonder, leaving behind the familiar comforts of his home.

Without boundries, without limits he decided to become a child of the world.
